Europe Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Market Outlook 2017 ÷ 2026

Total installed solar capacity in Europe was 98.9 GW in 2015, representing the largest share (43.6%) of the world’s solar generating capacity, revealed the Renewable Market Watch™. Top countries per installed capacity include Germany (39,636 MW), Italy (18,916 MW), United Kingdom (9,077 MW), Spain (7,132 MW), France (6,549 MW), Belgium (3,200 MW), Greece (2,596 MW) and Czech Republic (2,084 MW). Electricity generation from solar peaked in 2014 in the following countries: Germany (36,056 GWh), Italy (22,319 GWh), Spain (13,673 GWh), France (5,909 GWh), United Kingdom (4,050 GWh), Greece (3,792 GWh), Belgium (2,883 GWh), and Czech Republic (2,123 GWh).
The EU solar market had its peak in capacity additions in 2011, followed by three years of decline. In 2015, there were 7.5 GW added, with three countries alone responsible for over 75% of the EU’s new capacity additions – United Kingdom (3.7 GW), Germany (1.5 GW) and France (0.9 GW) – and others, Netherlands (450 MW) and Italy (300 MW). The European market is very challenging due to stagnating electricity demand, changes in policy – such as Spain’s retroactive policy changes and tax on self-consumption which took the country out of the picture – from feed-in tariffs incentives to tenders and feed-in premiums for large-scale systems, among others. In terms of CSP capacity, Spain remains the global leader with 2.3 GW installed, but did not add any new capacity in 2015.
