Cumulative Installed Solar PV Capacity in Poland Quickly Grows

Solar PV power generates electricity with no global warming pollution, no fuel costs, and no risks of fuel price spikes, and has the real potential to support the coal dependent Poland in transition toward cleaner, reliable, and affordable sources of electricity. Solar energy’s rapid growth in Poland is evident – even casual observers will note the construction of solar photovoltaics (PV) power plants across the country. Poland is promising emerging market for photovoltaic energy investments among Central East European (CEE) countries. After several inadequate changes in renewable energy laws in Poland between 2011 and 2015, finally market has started to move forward since 2016. Cumulative installed solar PV capacity in the country is quickly growing in the last two years under the renewable energy sources (RES) auction model and net metering support scheme established by the Polish government.

The average sunshine duration in Poland is 1,600 hours per year, according to the Polish Academy of Science and the average solar irradiation on a horizontal surface is approximately 1,080 kWh/m2. According to the Polish Energy Policy 2050 cumulative installed solar PV capacity in the country will rise to 15.83 GW by 2050. Mandatory targets of the Directive 2009/28/EC on the Promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources set by the European Union (EU) for Poland are set to 15 % by 2020.

Solar PV power in Poland has the potential to supply a significant amount of electricity that is both environmentally and economically attractive. Renewable Market Watch™ estimates that cumulative installed solar PV capacity in Poland may exceed 1.37 GW by the end of 2020, thanks to the government support, rapidly-falling costs of solar power, and a growing role for batteries, including electric vehicle batteries, in balancing electricity supply and demand. Investments in solar photovoltaic (PV) projects under the auctions for energy from renewable energy sources (RES) shall have prevailing part of the Polish solar PV market.
