Discussion for Large Scale Solar PV Power Plant has Started Earlier This Year in Sokolac Municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia's Sokolac municipality said on 21 February 2020 that Investment Group Balkan established by companies from Russia, China and Lithuania has expressed interest in building a solar park on an area of 100 hectares in the municipality. They added that he has presented to the potential investors a municipal energy study dating back to 2005, which proposes the construction of two photovoltaic plants on the territory of Sokolac - one of 60 MW and another one of 80 MW. Sokolac is located in the Republic of Srpska - one of the two autonomous entities that form Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina is an integral part of the Dayton Peace Agreement and has created a specific State comprising two entities, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Srpska. Under this constitutional set-up, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign state with a decentralized political and administrative structure.
The solar energy sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina is not developed yet. Bosnia and Herzegovina can be counted among more favourable locations in Europe with solar irradiation figures on the horizontal surface of 1,240 kWh/m2 in the north of the country, and up to 1,600 kWh/m2 in the south. The energy sector is one of the most powerful in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a long tradition and huge potentials and opportunities for further development and investment.
- The main energy resource of Bosnia and Herzegovina is coal (brown coal and lignite), with estimated reserves of 10 x 109 tons
- Potential for the exploitation of solar and geothermal energy are available too but have not been explored and exploited
- Only about 35 % of the huge hydro potential of over 6,000 MW is in use
- According to the extensive researches, there is the significant wind energy potential
- Raw material resources for the bio-mass energy are extremely favourable, including approximately 1.5 million m3 of forest/wood industry residues (all wood waste, sawdust, chips, and chipped technical wood), etc.
