Geothermal Energy Generation Potential of Belarus

/15th November 2019, by Renewable Market Watch™/

The Republic of Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by the Russian Federation (Russia) to the north and east, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Belarus covers an area of 207 595 square kilometers (km2) (40% of which is forested) and has 9.5 million inhabitants. Minsk, the largest city, is the national capital and home to 20.6% of the population; 77.6% of the population is urban and 22.6% is rural.

Belarus’s geothermal potential is relatively undiscovered, with only a few regions having been tested. Of the tested regions, the most promising geothermal energy potential lies in the Pripyat Trough (Gomel region) and the Podlasie-Brest Depression (Brest region), in dozens of abandoned deep wells. Other areas studied include the shallow sedimentary horizons in the western part of the country, while potential for low-enthalpy geothermal energy is believed to exist over the entire territory.

Use of heat pumps in Belarus is at the initial stage. At the beginning of 2019, there were about 276 geothermal installations with heat pumps in the county (total capacity is about 12.9 MW), according to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Renewable Power Market Outlook 2019 – 2028. These installations are used for heating water-supply and sanitary system, cottages and hospitals (e.g., in Nesvizh). The undoubted advantage of heat pumps is an ability to provide heating to objects which are not connected to a district heating system. However, implementation of heat pumps in Belarus is complicated by the fact that groundwater used in the geothermal heat pump has a high salinity, thus heat pumps require more frequent and expensive cleaning.
